Just curious….I used to ONLY drive cars with a manual transmission and I miss it! I liked it, I don’t know why. I can’t wait til my current car is paid off so I can buy a car with a manual transmission (looking at Audi A4′s and I like VW Passats too but don’t know if the VW has the option of being manual). But I’ve noticed that not too many women I know even know how to do it anymore. So I wanted to know how many women on here will say they can.

hi i tring to learn how to dirve a stick but have some trouble figuring it out. from what i get each gear is like a range of speed, 1st can be from 0-20mph, 2nd from 20-40, 3rd from 40-60, and 5th from 60-speeding ticket. is this right? is there any other way of looking at it that might help me get a hang of it better?
my second ??? is about down shifting, if im going 60mph in 5th gear, and then i slowdown to 25mph, can i shift all the way down to 2nd?

Wondering if it is possible for a mazda protege 1990, just because i’m tired of repairing the automatic one. What extra parts do I need for the conversion and is it possible?

Hi, I am going to purchase a Nissan 350z and need to clarify some things on driving a manual. I have driven manual once at a dealer, so anything would be greatly appreciated. I first stepped on the clutch, and at the same time, let go of it while stepping on the gas. When I did this, the car did move but it jerked quitea bit before shifting to 2nd. Am I supposed to let go of the clutch a little and then apply the gas? Also, is it safe to just shift without the engine on? Will it wear out the gears or does that only apply when the car is actually on? How would you be able to launch a manual transmission car? Lastly, how would you prevent from rolling back from a hill? Would you use your e-brake or just stay in 1st gear with your breaks and then step on the gas to prevent the car from rolling? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

1. When moving short distances, e.g. parallel parking, backing up from a parking spot, is it okay (is this the right way?) to just not give gas but let the clutch out to the biting point to get the car to move just a bit? Would this hurt the clutch?
2. Starting on a hill, is it okay to use the clutch again to hold the car for a second or two then apply gas? How much wear would this put on the clutch on a steep incline?
3. How many times can a new clutch endure clicking/clunking starts, quite a few or not many? I am getting smoother starts now, but had many clicking/clunking starts in the beginning..
Thanks

I recently leaned from my neighbor (an extremely experienced driver) that you can drive a manual transmission car without using the clutch (not for regular use, but just if the line were to break or something). I tried this out, and it works fine if in shifting if you make sure you time your shifts with your RPMs, but I have no idea how you would be able to start rolling (shift out of neutral) because i tried this and it just wouldn’t shift into first. Has anyone heard of this before and have any advice?

So my transmission is stuck in 2nd gear and apparently a cyllinoid(however you spell it) is burned out. B/c it’s a VW you have to buy the whole valve body and the transmission has been crap since the beginning. The mechanic I’ve been taking it to seems to recommend a manual being put into it that would cost about the same and he says probably no more problems. If we fix the automatic transmission some more problems may arise. Either way is about $2000 to fix. It’s a 97 Jetta GLS with 109k miles. Which would you do? Plus, I don’t want another car payment right now so trading it in is the last option. Plus, I don’t know how to drive a manual yet. Thank you!

I have a really worn out 1994 manual Daewoo 1.5i and i cant afford a newer car yet.
Apart from problems sch as the fan belt squeaking, engine pinging, horn doesn’t work, etc etc…….my most recent problem is with the clutch.
As i was driving home, i noticed that when i put the clutch pedal in (as i come to a stop), the car will ratlle violently as though it is about to stall, for a few seconds then stop. The rattling is just like if i were to leave the clutch half out whilst stopped.
Any ideas what the problem is? but more importantly, how much it would cost to repair?
Thanks.

I used to drive manual long time ago and ever since I moved to North America I have been driving Automatic. I have to admit that I am missing manual.
I am in the process of purchasing a new Toyota Camry. I have an option of automatic and a manual. It is not that I do not know how to drive manual. In fact, I love driving it.
It is just that I am coming across rumors that Manual is not a preferred type in North America because of weather. People are saying that Manual in Eastern NA where it snows a lot will not be a good option. I will have to get it serviced quite often in snow weather.
Also, could someone tell me if mechanics are more comfy with manuals or automatic. Would I be able to find mechanics for manual here and there
Much appreciate
Thanks all

If I learned to ride a motorcycle before a manual car, will this give me a learning curve when trying to learn a standard transmission car?
I have my eyes set on a Mazda Miata (used and between 1990-1993) and am considering having my mom buy it and then driving it in a parking lot.
I don’t know anyone with a manual so that’s why I’m resorting to this option.
Thanks!
