I have an automatic 2002 vw jetta 2.0. It has 86,000 miles on it. Just recently my car turned off by itslef while i was driving. When I restarted the car the check engine came on. I took it to a place and they said I need a tune up. I was wondering How much would the tune up cost me?
My clutch went out a couple of months ago. I took it into a shop to make sure it wasn’t something else, but they rather quickly surmised that it was indeed a bad clutch. Not being able to afford their repair estimate, I have slowly chipped away at getting the transmission out on weekends where the weather was decent. I finally got the transmission out last weekend, but could not find the old throwout bearing. My guess was that when the repair shop inspected the clutch, the throwout bearing had already come off, and they just kept it, figuring that they would be doing the work anyway. For the life of me though, I couldn’t figure out where the bearing went. It seemed like it should go between the pressure plate and the clutch plate, but I couldn’t figure out how to put those two pieces together and get the bearing to just sit in the right space between them. My father, who was a mechanic in the military for 20 years, surmised that perhaps it worked with out the bearing (although he couldn’t answer why the new clutch came with one, he was quite confused by the way this clutch went together) his theory was that the clutch push-arm just pushed against the cover that went over the pressure plate bolts. After several unsuccessful attempts on my part to get the bearing in between the clutch and the pressure plate, I relented to his theory. My car drove about three miles before the clutch started slipping. We have a couple of theories about what we did wrong, and almost all of them require me to pull the transmission back out again. But before I do all of that, I was hoping that someone could tell me: (1) does the ’96 Jetta require a throwout bearing, (2) how do you get it to stay in the right spot when you are putting the clutch and the pressure plate back together, and (3) do you keep the throwout bearing in the little plastic case that it comes in? Thanks.
Wow, a lot of judgmental people out there. Perhaps people who have never seen the clutch/ transmission setup on a ’96 Jetta. Firstly, the assumption that the shop kept the old throwout bearing comes from the theory that the old bearing broke or came off and when the shop pulled the inspection plate off the pieces fell out. I can assure you that when we took the transmission out that there was no throwout bearing to be found. Secondly, my father has replaced many clutches on many vehicles quite successfully. He was quite flummoxed by how the clutch is set up in this car. He said that it was completely backward from any he had seen before. The way that it is set up, from the engine, is flywheel, pressure plate, clutch and then the transmission. The clutch arm (coming from the transmission) has a nub that would seem to fit the throwout bearing, but the bearing would have to be on the other sider of the clutch, or the spindles of the transmission would be unable to engage the clutch.
A 40*f cold start of a 1.6l Volkswagen diesel. The reason the tach doesn’t work right away is it’s driven by the alternator, which waits a moment to excite.

10 minutes is a bitch, so here is part 2 Here is me, fixing my wife’s Jetta (again). I had thought originally that there was a leak in the head gasket (leading out instead of in thankfully) turns out it was the cooling hose flange, it was hard to pinpoint with all the crap around, the angle of the dangle and trajectory of the squirting fluid of life. So, here’s a vid on how to fix it (or at least how – I – fixed it). Hope it helps!! Been a couple days and no sign of leakage!!
2001 VW Jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg Edition -Custom Short Ram Intake -APR Stage 1 Engine Mounts -42 Draft Designs 3″ Street Turbo-back Exhaust w/ Dual Tip Before you ask, yes it has a magnaflow resonator and muffler, as well as a 200 cell high flow catalytic converter. The system is not ceramic coated. I also had to cut out the stock valence to accommodate the dual tips (stock were turn-down style).
