I ride a 2005 Yamaha FJR and a 1973 BMW R75/5. I don't have a season for parts or farkle buying, just as I need them. Living in So Cal my riding is year-round.
I tend to buy from specialists (dealerships or companies that make specific widgets) or group buys coordinated on m/c forums. I usually plan a big buy or two at the annual Cycle World show in Long Beach (sometimes the best prices at that show).

2 Harley Davidson FXRs and a XL1200 sidecar (the dogs bike)
Parts are bought when needed or a good deal comes along ( swap meet , bike shows etc.)
Big ticket items are usually bought through catalog, ebay, or online store depending on price.
Regular maintenance stuff, I will get local as the availability out weighs the savings
I think most guys will do major repairs and upgrades during the winter so the bike is missed less than during warmer months.

94 YZF 750R Want to own 07 R1.
Wintertime always has reduced prices.
I buy from other bikers on craigslist.org. I don't like Ebay. Otherwise I go to my local Yamaha dealer. Prices are a little high but for things like brakes and other safety equipment, I'd rather go with a dealer.

The best place to buy and sell a bike are totally opposites.
One place you get more for selling and one place you pay less when buying.
For selling: The best place is ebay. It costs about $35 to sell a bike unless they have a special. One time they had a $1 special and that was good.
For buying: The best place is craigslist.com

KTM 530EXC, KTM 525EXC, KTM540MXC (with thumperracing kit), CRF450, KDX220, KDX200, CRF230 (herding cattle & daughter's bike), XR650R, mule trans4x4, KTM Adventure950 ...
I buy my parts whenever needed, maintain religiously top to bottom...
most of the time, I buy from my local bike shops ... support those that are in business to support my hobbies ... at least when they are within close reasonable price of online. one of my theories is that I can pour my money into a local shop, have the parts immediately, that keeps them in business when others follow suit ... then in the case of an emergency, there is a shop available... if we don't support the local shop, they go out of business, which means when you are broke down, you will have to wait on shipping ... puts a nice feeling to have that personal touch with a shop instead of online... of course, that's probably old school thinking on my part ... but why would I order online, wait 3-7 days on parts to arrive when I could be out riding much faster by buying local??? to save a few dollars by the time you add in shipping costs... but likewise, if the shop doesn't have something in stock and I can find it cheaper online, why not...
