Replace your 305 big block with a 383 small block rightaway.

See if you can find a four barrel for it

Without going to a bigger engine or nitrous or turbos you could bore and stroke it to L88 dimensions and install late model heads for about 650hp. One thing – I thought in 77 they were still working with the 307 rather than the 305. You might want to P&G it to be sure.

A 305 is a small-block engine with the same external dimensions as the 265,283,302,327,350 and 400ci Chevy small-block family of engines. The best you can hope for is 1hp-per-ci., if you want to keep it naturally aspirated. I’ve seen 300hp versions built from a combination of stock parts that are farmed from the many versions of this engine family. The very important aspect here, is to build the engine to run on 87 octane fuel without pinging,- ( pre-detonation), it’s-self to an early death. Aim for the 250hp level and you will also be blessed with a smooth idle that will work great with an auto trans and power brakes. Powersteering and a.c. will work great too. This car will wake-up and deliver a solid next level of performance, one that you will trully appreciate!

you need the whole package, a set of 383 pistons, rods and crankshaft. some Edelbrock heads and manifold with a large four barrel carb.. and you still have a small block… the big block (BBC) starts out at 396 ci..

Hi. The 305 is a dog. It is an emmision motor .Both the heads and the transmission sucks . Truthfully dont waster your money on it. You will have smog problems if you screw with it too much. You say you dont have much money but if you must get parts get headers, exhaust and a new cam. DO NOT GO CRAZY ON THE CARB OR CAM..You will need compression to get more power. Try milling the heads and a thinner head gasket to bump the comression a little…If you get parts that will be able to be used later on a new larger engine. I had a 77 elco and it was a slug until I put a 350 in it. Check out jegs zz4 crate engines they are pretty affordable. Also check out the new magazine rack I thiknk hotrod or one of the carcraft or popular hotrodding ?. They just did a build on a 10:1 small block that made 400hp for $3k.. I hope it helps…If not sonny builds wicked 832cid bbs for only $35K. So affordable I think I will take 2 once my refi goes thru….Dave

The 305 is a small block. In 1977 it had 145 HP and 245 lb ft of torque. Compression ratio was 8.5 to 1. The easiest fairly inexpensive upgrades would be a good intake manifold with a good 4 Bbl carb and a set of headers. The next improvement would be a high performance camshaft. If you want to keep running regular gas you probably don’t want to increase your compression much. The 305 will never be a big horsepower engine, but it can be improved on from stock and run pretty good for not a lot of money

i seen a build of a 305 on powerbloctv.com if you raise the rear gear ratio you loose top speed but gain take off. you can gain 10Hp here and there with each thing you do.headers and pipe with some magna flo or similar and a intake for the eng but the 305 may be just to small for a big carb.flooding performance.put you pennies into a krate motor.autozone.com or the kregan.com both have their warranty’s and sales ,or coupons.
