    No doubt. Production engines don’t normally push for 200hp/Liter. That has more to do with stress than melting the engine. Aluminum melts at about 1220°F or 660°C, quite manageable but great care is needed in the cooling system. Best to invest in Radiators and oil and tranny coolers up front. Then worry about getting more power out of the car. If nothing else it’ll help the engine last longer.

  2. DocWolph says:

    Today you can wring out better than 400hp and not kill the engine in half a day. But still, at 300hp this would have been a killer autocross racer and Rally car.

  3. tokay444 says:

    that was the road going rs200. not the group b rally car with nearly 600bhp from 1.5L

  4. russ13b says:

    highly tuned race engines have high maintenance needs. If you consider that a 2liter 4cyl engine with around 300 to 400 hp has a “flame front” temperature of around 1200 degress, and the aluminium most of the engine is made from melts at around 750 degrees, you can start to see the problem. Oil bakes on to the pistons and can’t cool them as well, seals start to melt, etc etc, rebuild needed!!

    It means the engine would would wear out and would need a complete overhaul to use again. Very short-term reliability, to pump out as much power as possible, but just enough life to get it through some races.

  6. EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME says:

    ok wow uve really done your studing on this car

  7. M0T0RCRAFT says:

    @EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME

    Yes what ever the detonation can destroy. Lean a/f mixture can burn valves so all these must be renew.

  8. EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME says:

    so your saying that the piston rings went in it due to shear rpm and power so the engine lost compression and you would have to get a rebuild the fix it right

  9. M0T0RCRAFT says:

    @EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME

    Yes these 2100cc capacity engines that produces over 500hp. Fast wear of piston rings, pistons. By lean a/f ratio, detonation and +2bar boost.

    This is all why the BOSH engine management system. It did not have knocking sensor and mapping adjustment was not possible. So 10h flat out that engine can take hell of a punishment.

    Installing a fully adjustable engine management like Autronic. You can push even more hp out of the engine and still make it last.

  10. EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME says:

    what does it mean after 10 hrs of full throttle the engine is gone does it mean that it loses all of its compression? someone help

  11. SickAudi says:

    thats a sick test they do!! rev the car and see how long it will run for at full rev/full gear/fullboost etc….

  12. AudiMotorsport says:

  20. Kurzb3 says:

    yep Roland Gumpert was chief of audi sport in the 80s Group B times and he is the father of the Gumpert Apollo

  21. M3Conv says:

    Is the Roland Gumpert interviewed all those years ago the same person who developed the Gumpert Apollo (fastest car round the top gear track)?

  22. AudiMotorsport says:

    thank you!

  23. ChristianVonSTIG says:

    Someone ought to post some of the other cars from the Ultimate Cars show. Thanks for posting this one AudiMotorsport.

  24. RRT3am says:

    Pezdetz666 was claiming that it is a shame that the RS200 crashed and killed people … Why a shame? It happened in Portugal in 1986 and it was for sure not the car’s or the driver’s fault. This shows poor organisation and for sure crazy fans. I know we all want to be as closest as it gets, but closing the road to wait for the car and pulling back in the last second is just way too stupid …

  25. AudiMotorsport says:

    not just portugal fans…..every rally was full of fans
