Does My Manuel Transmission Need Repair?

I didn’t drive the car for awhile and it was difficult to shift after starting to drive again. It’s gotten better as I’ve driven it more but it still seems to get stuck too much. Transmission fluid, filter?

The gears could very well be lightly rusty. Depends if you drove the car in like salty roads in the winter or rainy weather. If it was transmission fluid, I would presume, that the shifting would not get better. You never mentioned it directly, but it sounds like a manuel transmission. It very well could be your clutch, or the system from where you shift to the gear box itself. I would check the fluid levels. and perhaps lube something if it looks like it needs it. If it still presists. You might wana take it into a professional. Because you very well could ahve metal shavings in your trasmission, and that would be destroying it also. I hoped this helped.

first of all if its a manual trans (stick shift) it has no filter and depending on year and make of car / truck it should be gear oil. Honda’s are engine oil some ford models are auto trans fluid. Depends on what sticks? the shifter? engagement of clutch? usually if a vehicle sits for a while the metal on the flywheel and pressure plate will form rust making the disc stick to either or.

The gear oil has probably thickened up, usually due to cooler temperatures. Check the owner’s manual, it may be time to have the fluid changed to a thinner viscosity.
